The first week runs 17 to 23 January and packs in eight games. Three of them are worth circling before the season starts: the opener, the first Newlands game, and the first Saturday double-header.

SA20 Season 5 starts on Sunday 17 January 2027, and the opener is a game with a recent history behind it. Sunrisers Eastern Cape face Pretoria Capitals at St George's Park in Gqeberha, and the fixture is a rematch of the 2026 final. Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the defending champions. The start is 15:30 SAST, which is 18:30 in Pakistan and 19:00 in India, so readers in both countries get a full evening game on the first day of the season.

The first week runs from 17 to 23 January and packs in eight games, one a day from Sunday to Friday and then two on the Saturday. After the opener, Paarl Royals host Joburg Super Kings at Boland Park on Monday 18 January at 17:30 SAST. Pretoria Capitals host Durban's Super Giants at SuperSport Park on Tuesday 19 January at the same time. MI Cape Town host Joburg Super Kings at Newlands on Wednesday 20 January, Durban's Super Giants host Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Kingsmead on Thursday 21 January, and MI Cape Town host Paarl Royals at Newlands on Friday 22 January. The Saturday brings the first double-header: Durban's Super Giants against Pretoria Capitals at Kingsmead at 13:00 SAST, then Joburg Super Kings against Sunrisers Eastern Cape at the Wanderers at 17:30 SAST.

The first game to circle is the opener itself, for two reasons that have nothing to do with form, because no form exists yet. It is the only game of the week with a 15:30 SAST start on a Sunday, which makes it the easiest game of the week to watch in full from Pakistan and India. It is also the game that sets the tone for the defending champions, who play at home in Gqeberha and then travel to Durban for their second game on 21 January.

The second game to circle is MI Cape Town against Joburg Super Kings at Newlands on Wednesday 20 January. It is the first game of the season at Newlands, and Newlands is also the ground that hosts the final on 21 February, so the season both opens its Cape Town account and ends there. MI Cape Town play their first two home games in this week, against Joburg Super Kings on 20 January and against Paarl Royals on 22 January, both at 17:30 SAST.

The third date to circle is Saturday 23 January, the first double-header of the season. The early game at Kingsmead starts at 13:00 SAST, which is 16:00 in Pakistan and 16:30 in India, and the late game at the Wanderers starts at 17:30 SAST. The two games are in different cities, Durban and Johannesburg, so they cannot both be watched in person. On television or a stream, though, the pair makes a full day of it, and it is the first test of the Saturday pattern that repeats on 30 January, 6 February and 13 February.

One thing the opening week cannot do is settle anything. Every side plays two or three games in these seven days: Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Pretoria Capitals, Joburg Super Kings and Durban's Super Giants play three each, while Paarl Royals and MI Cape Town play two each. The points table starts blank and only fills from completed results, so the games worth circling in week one are the ones with a good time slot, a good ground, or a recent final behind them, not the ones that decide qualification. That comes later, when the league reaches its final stretch in February.

To follow the week, the full schedule page lists all eight games with grounds and start times, the today page leads with the next fixture once the season starts, and each match page carries its own preview with the start in all four zones. The points table will start moving after the opener, and the results page will list completed games in reverse order as they come in.

What each circled game actually decides

Week one settles nothing on the table: every side starts on zero and the points only move from completed results. What the circled games decide is smaller but still real. The opener decides whether the defending champions start at home with a win in a rematch of the 2026 final, before Sunrisers Eastern Cape travel to Durban for their second game on 21 January. A loss would hand Pretoria Capitals an early away win against the champions.

The Newlands game on 20 January decides who takes the first points at the ground that hosts the final on 21 February, and it is MI Cape Town’s first home game of the season. The double-header on 23 January decides which sides handle the Saturday rhythm first: Kingsmead at 13:00 SAST, then the Wanderers at 17:30 SAST, in two different cities. The pattern repeats on 30 January, 6 February and 13 February.
